Statements Responding to KCEN-TV Questions

November 2, 2016

Q: "One of the reasons I came to Baylor was because there was a lot of administrative support...the administration has been extremely supporting and our board of regents in saying what is a [Title IX] model that you think would work." That statement was made after the ESPN report and after this whole thing blew up. It seems to contradict her claims on 60 Minutes Sports. Does Baylor have a response to the discrepancy in the statements Ms. Crawford has made post-resignation?

Baylor: That is a great question – and you should definitely ask Patty Crawford about that. We share your concerns about her mystifying change in tone and substance. Just for the record, Baylor made every effort to support Patty Crawford during her tenure, including providing her with extensive management training, growing the Title IX office from one to seven full-time employees, and increasing the departmental budget over 250 percent.

Q: What does Baylor hope to accomplish with "The Truth" website?

Baylor: As interim president Dr. David Garland stated in his letter to the Baylor family yesterday, the website provides factual details about what happened at Baylor and about our ongoing efforts to learn from our mistakes and to make the right decisions moving forward. The site will continue to disclose important facts and developments on a timely basis and respond to media coverage when appropriate.

Q: In the 60 Minutes Sports piece Ms. Crawford accuses Baylor of trying to attack her mental health in an attempt to discredit her? In Baylor's view, is that an accurate depiction of what happened?

Baylor: Nothing could be further from the truth. Baylor has never questioned Patty Crawford’s mental health. On re-watching the "60 Minutes Sports" segment, you’ll see no evidence was provided to support that claim. Baylor has responded to questions posed by "60 Minutes Sports" and a variety of other outlets in an honest and forthright manner using documentation to add clarity. We would never attack – and have never attacked – a former employee’s mental health.
